Food, gut microbes, and colorectal cancer: a journey through three studies. The body is a visual metaphor. Microbial measurements come from stool samples; positions do not map locations inside the gut. Arc size and length show prevalence in the diet study: the share of people carrying each species. Stroke weight shows associations with relative abundance: a microbe’s share of the sampled community. Species matched across studies by name, each match approved in a person’s review, carry their diet result into the cancer view as an inner arc. Moving marks connect datasets collected from different people. The studies involve different populations and do not establish a pathway from diet to cancer. The background darkens with depth and, below the middle, the marks switch to light ink: shade is depth, not data. At the end the walk pulls back onto one long print of every mark.
